Oriskany's Anthony Kernan storms back to win MV Athlete of the Week after Class D triumph

Both Anthony Kernan and Chase Regan bedazzled fans in the Class D and C baseball Section III finals earlier this week.

But in this week's Mohawk Valley Athlete of the Week voting, the Oriskany junior and Little Falls senior remained engaged in a back-and-forth battle.

Kernan, however, grabbed the lead eventually and held it firm the rest of the way.

The junior shined for Oriskany Monday in the 1-0 Class D Section III title win over Belleville-Henderson as he allowed just two hits and struck out nine.

Kernan and Co. face their toughest challenge yet Saturday at noon at Onondaga Community College. They'll host Section IV's Deposit/Hancock in the NYSPHSAA Class D Regional. The Eagles are 43-2 combined in their last two seasons and won last season's Class D state title.

During the season, a poll launches each Monday at uticaod.com/sports and timestelegram.com/sports to determine the Athlete of the Week from the previous week's top performances. Your vote determines who will be honored as the Mohawk Valley's best.

The poll is live until 8 p.m. Tuesday. The winner is announced as well on our Twitter page.
