One Piece‘s eight-episode first season premiered on Thursday, Aug. 31, instantly topping the list of Netflix’s most popular shows.
The final shot of Episode 8 strongly implied that Smoker, one of Luffy’s many adversaries from the manga, will be pursuing the Straw Hat Pirates in Season 2. But if you’re looking for official confirmation on that, you’ll have to look elsewhere.
“I’m not allowed to say,” One Piece co-showrunner Steven Maeda told TVLine about this character ahead of the show’s drop on Netflix. “But you could read into it what you want to read into it. I think it’s important to tee up a little bit moving forward, especially with a series like this where there’s a really strong plot drive. I would leave that to the audience to figure out.”
