Oklahoma State softball rewind: Morgyn Wynne, Micaela Wark go wild against former team

STILLWATER — While the Oklahoma State softball team suffered its third loss of the season, it bounced back with its second Big 12 series sweep last week.

The Cowgirls dropped a midweek game before rolling over Kansas to stay unbeaten in Big 12 play.

That brought to an end a seven-game road swing in which OSU went 6-1. It returns home this week to host five games in six days.

This week also presents the final home Big 12 series before Bedlam in May.

Here’s a look at what we learned about the Cowgirls last week:

Wynne to Wark

Morgyn Wynne and Micaela Wark both signed with Kansas out of high school, but have since transferred to OSU, and they combined for quite a weekend against their former team.

The duo combined for eight hits and seven runs batted in over the three-game sweep.

Wark, who redshirted at Kansas as a freshman last year because of injury, landed the first big blow with the go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh, a two-run shot that broke a 5-5 tie. She went 3-for-4 in the game.

Wynne drove in a run in the seventh inning of the second game. Then she and Wark went a combined 3-for-7 and had two RBIs each in the finale.

For the season, Wark and Wynne are second and third on the team with seven and six home runs, respectively. Wark is batting .376 in her first college season.

Midweek stumble

Oklahoma State entered the week ranked in the top five nationally in fielding percentage, but a pair of costly errors contributed to the 8-7 loss at Wichita State.

After falling behind 4-0, the Cowgirls had fought back for a 5-4 lead in the fourth inning when the defensive lapse stung them.

After a pair of one-out singles, a throwing error on third baseman Megan Bloodworth allowed a run to score, and two more came in on a fielding error on left fielder Tallen Edwards. Another run scored with two outs when the Cowgirls would have otherwise been out of the inning.

It was only the fifth time all season OSU had committed more than one error in a game, but two of those instances were in losses.

Carwile’s bounceback

OSU right fielder Katelynn Carwile had hit a bit of a rough stretch at the plate through March, but with the calendar turning to April, the junior from Purcell has reawakened.

Carwile had five hits with two doubles and four RBIs in the Kansas series, continuing a strong start to the month.

In six April games, she is 9-for-16 with three doubles and five RBIs, boosting her batting average back up to .344. Her double total of 12 is second-most on the team. Last year, she led the Cowgirls in doubles with 14.
