Oklahoma State football: Bob Fenimore to join Cowboys' Ring of Honor in 2022 season

Fenimore to join OSU football's Ring of Honor in the 2022 season

Bob Fenimore will be the third Cowboy to join Oklahoma State football's Ring of Honor.

OSU announced Wednesday that it will honor its greatest player from the program's early years on Oct. 8 at Boone Pickens Stadium when the Cowboys host Texas Tech.

Fenimore, a 1972 inductee into the National Football Foundation College Football Hall of Fame, was the first overall pick of the 1947 NFL Draft by the Chicago Bears.

Running back greats Thurman Thomas and Barry Sanders are the only Cowboys currently honored in the Ring of Honor.

In OSU’s undefeated 1945 season, he was the national leader in both total offense (1,641), and rushing (1,119), while ranking seventh in punting (39.0), and 13th in scoring (72). His 18 interceptions during his OSU career remain a school record, and his 4,627 career yards of total offense were not eclipsed until quarterback Mike Gundy came along more than 40 years later.

“Bob Fenimore was one of the greatest players to ever play at Oklahoma State,” said Gundy, now the Cowboys' head football coach. “It was obviously a different era of the game than what we see today, but the way he dominated in every facet was unbelievable. He was a No. 1 overall NFL Draft pick and our greatest player of that era. His place in the Ring of Honor is as well-deserved as any player in the history of the school.”

Cowboys hammer Wichita State

Oklahoma State collected 16 hits, including three each from Jake Thompson and Ian Daugherty, in its 12-6 baseball victory Tuesday night against Wichita State at Riverfront Stadium.

Daugherty, who hit his first college home run, and Griffin Doersching added three RBIs to help the No. 7-ranked Cowboys improve to 28-13. OSU pitched by committee, using seven hurlers.

Oral Roberts whips Sooners

Oral Roberts won its second game against a fellow Division I baseball school, beating Oklahoma 5-1 on Tuesday night at J.L. Johnson Stadium in Tulsa. ORU (24-14) finished the regular season with a 2-1 record against Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.

ORU jumped on the Sooners in the first inning, taking a 3-0 lead on Holden Breeze's bases-clearing triple. The Golden Eagles had a solo home run from Jackson Loftin in the third inning and scored their last run in the fourth on a wild pitch.

OU (25-14) scored its only run in the seventh inning on a wild pitch. OU left the bases loaded twice in the game.

Slumping Dodgers lose to Sugar Land

Late Tuesday night, Sugar Land took an early five-run lead and went on to beat the Dodgers 7-4.

The Dodgers committed four errors, which led to five unearned runs. OKC drew within 6-4 in the eighth when Andy Burns slugged his third homer of the season. The Cowboys (9-10) answered in the top of the ninth on Corey Julks' first homer of the year.

Burns finished a triple shy of hitting for the cycle.

OSU's Anderson enters name in NBA Draft

For the second straight year, Oklahoma State guard Avery Anderson III has entered his name in the NBA Draft as an early entry. But he will maintain his college eligibility. The main goal is to receive another evaluation.

There remains the chance that Anderson could depart but he is coming off an up-and-down year in which he averaged 12.1 points and 3.1 rebounds. After a poor start to Big 12 play, he finished the season with double-digit scoring nights in seven of the final eight games. In the 2020-21 season, he was a dynamic secondary scorer down the stretch behind Cade Cunningham, propelling his draft profile.

Suns beat Pelicans, take 3-2 series lead

Mikal Bridges scored 31 points, Chris Paul added 22 points and 11 assists and the top-seeded Phoenix Suns beat the New Orleans Pelicans 112-97 to take a 3-2 lead in the Western Conference first-round series. The Suns never trailed but also never totally pulled away against the feisty Pelicans. Phoenix improved to 50-0 this season when leading after three quarters. Brandon Ingram scored 22 points to lead the Pelicans.

GRIZZLIES 111, TIMBERWOLVES 109: Ja Morant scored on a layup with a second left, and the Memphis Grizzlies rallied from 11 points down in the fourth quarter to edge the Minnesota Timberwolves and grab a 3-2 lead in their first-round Western Conference series. The NBA’s most improved player scored 18 in the fourth quarter and finished with 30 and had 13 rebounds and nine assists.

HEAT 97, HAWKS 94: Victor Oladipo scored 23 points, Bam Adebayo added 20 points and 11 rebounds, and the Miami Heat moved into the Eastern Conference semifinals by beating the Atlanta Hawks. Trae Young’s rough series for Atlanta remained that way. The former OU and Norman North High star finished 2 for 12 from the floor, scoring just 11 points. For the series, the Hawks’ guard shot 32% against Miami’s swarming defense.
