OHSAA state wrestling 2023 | Saturday's results: Area has 20 state finalists going Sunday

COLUMBUS — As the quarterfinals begin Saturday the question is the same.

Will the Greater Akron/Canton area continue to rule the roost at the boys and girls state wrestling tournament?

The first round brought tons of upsets and even more excitement.

We'll know who the finalists are by day's end.

For now, here's an up-to-the-minute look at what's happening at Value City Arena:

The final number of OHSAA state placers from Greater Akron/Canton is 37 in Division I alone

Add Medina’s Blaine Chrisman (175), North Royalton’s Kyle Sandborn (175), Highland’s Lukas Stiles (190) and Wadsworth’s Coen Grimm (190) to the list of wrestlers that will finish as a state placer.

The final number of OHSAA state placers from Greater Akron/Canton wrestlers in Division I will be 36

Add Medina’s Blaine Chrisman (175), North Royalton’s Kyle Sandborn (175), Highland’s Lukas Stiles (190) and Wadsworth’s Coen Grimm (190) to the list of wrestlers that will finish as a state placer.

Twenty-one of those wrestlers will be in tonight’s semifinal.

Greater Akron/Canton area middleweights put four more in placement matches in OHSAA Division I state wrestling tournament

Advancing to tonight’s action from the bottom of the bracket from 144-165

Perry’s Marshall Geckler (144), Brecksville’s David Zambonis (150) and Evan Rizzo (157) and Nordonia’s Caleb Ridgely (165).

That’s 33 state placers with the big boys to go from the area in just Division I.

Eight Greater Akron/Canton area wrestlers win blood round matches through first six Division I weight classes

The number of state placers from the area in the big school division continues to rise as Aurora’s Luke Green (106), Brecksville’s Brett Stanley (113) and Kaden Jett (132), North Royalton's Mannix Wasco (138), Wadsworth’s Jack Dinwiddie (120), Stow’s Robert Davis (120), and Perry’s Emeric McBurney (106) and Charles Curtis (138) all won their go-to-the-podium matches.

And that’s only through 138 pounds!

Eight Greater Akron/Canton wrestlers earn All-Ohio places via the consolation bracket

The following eight local wrestlers won their consolation second round matches in Division II and will finish as All-Ohioans:

  • 126: Kolten Barker, Louisville;

  • 138: Braden Dunlap, STVM;

  • 144: Rylan Hurley, STVM;

  • 150: Tristan Craddock, Cloverleaf

  • 157: Anthony Lahoski, Woodridge;

  • 165: Steven Duffy, Woodridge;

  • 175: Hunter Dietrich, Minerva;

  • 215: Aidan Mozden, Alliance.

  • All five STVM wrestlers and all three Louisville wrestlers will be All-Ohioans.

Tuslaw goes 3-0 in consolation second round

In three consolation battles, with the chance to place on the line, the Mustangs went 3-0.

Tuslaw's Kaden Lawson topped Brookville's Hayden Jones, 9-3, at 106 pounds, ensuring Lawson will place as a freshman.

Mustangs senior Maxwell Cooper (144) extended his career with a 3-1 victory over Amanda-Clearcreek freshman Bodie Martin.

Tuslaw junior Jacob Lyons (150) kept his season going by a similarly tight margin, topping Seneca East junior Will Bischoff, 8-7.

All three will be first-time state placers.

Portage County, on the other hand, suffered a tough second round of the consolation bracket, with Crestwood's JP Wrobel and Rootstown's Tristan McKibben and Lane McKenzie all falling.

Wrobel, a three-time state qualifier, finished his junior year with a 44-5 mark for the Red Devils.

McKenzie, a Rovers senior and first-time state qualifier, finished 41-10, while McKibben, a Rovers sophomore also making his state debut, finished 45-8.

Greater Akron/Cantons send three girls to first OHSAA semifinal round

Three local girls will have a chance to wrestle for a state championship tonight - and all three advanced in emphatic fashion.

Manchester defending state champion Jaydyn McKinney was at her best, hitting a side headlock on Greeneview's Gwen Matt and pinning her in 23 seconds.

A side headlock also paved the way for Firestone 190-pounder Emily Lorenzon. She got a hold Olentangy Orange's Talia Mitchell and pinned her in 1:28 to earn her first All-Ohio place.

Finally, Minerva three-time state champion Alaina Jackson needed just 50 seconds pin Liberty-Benton's Evie Parmalee

Greater Akron/Canton area wrestlers wiped up with 22 state semifinalists after 175 through heavyweight concluded

Winning quarterfinal matches in the area were Brecksville’s Luke Vanadia (175) and Max Vanadia (215), Nordonia’s Jeremy Olszko (175), Stow’s Teddy Gregory (215), Perry’s Aidan Fockler (285), Barberton’s Roosevelt Andrews (285) and Wadsworth’s Aaron Ries (285).

Ries and Andrews will meet for the third time this season after splitting 3-1 overtime matches at the Suburban League (Ries) and Hoover District final (Andrews).

Four more Division I weight classes, eight more Greater Akron/Canton state semifinalists

The area continued to role with Medina’s Andrew Supers (157) knocking off Fairmont District champ Maclain Morency of Cincinnati Anderson 4-3 as the highlight match.

Also advancing from 144 to 165 were Brecksville’s Brock Herman (144), Nordonia’s Israel Petite (144) and Gino Perrine (157), Perry’s Christian Giltz (150), Wadsworth’s Jake Keirn (150) and Chris Earnest (157) and GlenOak’s Brandon Batson (165).

That brings the total to 14 with four weights to go.

World and Olympic champion Kyle Snyder is in attendance at the OHSAA state wrestling tournament

Former Ohio State great and three-time NCAA champion Kyle Snyder watched the Division I tournament mat side and gave his thoughts on the greatest spectacle Ohio has to offer.

“I haven’t been back for a while, but it just goes to show how important wrestling is to the state of Ohio,” Snyder said. “I used to come every year when I was competing for Ohio State. It’s incredible. I’m really looking forward to watching these guys and girls compete.”

Greater Akron/Canton still rising up at Division I state wrestling

Through the first six weight classes, the area put sevn in the state semifinals, which take place tonight at 5:30 p.m.

With 144 still going, Brecksville’s Rylan Seacrist (106), Aurora’s Jonny Green (113), Perry’s Mason Rohr (113) and Austin McBurney (126), Wadsworth’s Jaxon Joy (132), North Royalton's Mannix Wasco (138) and Walsh Jesuit’s Dy’Vaire “Boots” VanDyke (138) are two wins away from a state title.

Joy moves up the OHSAA rankings at the state wrestling tournament

With eight takedowns in his quarterfinal, Wadsworth’s Jaxon Joy (132) now has 322 takedowns this season. That puts him ninth this season with a minimum of two matches to go.

It’s trails only St. Vincent-St. Mary’s Ryan Skonieczny (336, 2013-14) in Northeast Ohio.

Skonieczny ranks sixth.

CVCA's Kyle Snider heads to semifinal for third straight year

Former CVCA state champion Kyle Snider is back in the semifinals for the third straight season. He advanced after a 10-3 win over Madison Comprehensive's Hunter Hutcheson.

Louisville sends two onto the semifinals in Division II

Louisville saw two of its big dogs advance to the semifinal round

Defending state champion Dominic Hoffarth rolled on at 150 pound with a 6-2 win over Reading's PJ Murphy. At 138 pounds, Dylan Rhoades shut out Wauseon's Zaden Torres.

However, 126-pounde Kolten Barker lost 5-3 in the tiebreaker round and dropped the consolations,.

St. Vincent-St. Mary goes 2-3 in OHSAA quarterfinal round

STVM had a mixed morning Saturday in the quarterfinals.

Defending state champion Bryce Skinner pinned Jonathan Alder's Xavier Pierce in 4:52, while 215-pounder Bryson Getz pinned in 2:50 to reach the semifinals.

However, 138-pounder Braden Dunlap, 155 pounds Rylan Hurley and 157-pounder Calvin Gwinn each dropped in the consolations.

Buckeye goes 4-0 in OHSAA Division II quarterfinals

After a rough day Friday, Buckeye's Saturday session got off to a perfect start.

Bucks 106-pounde Blake Bartos and 113-pounder Colyn Limbert each advanced to the semifinals. Barton advanced thanks to a last-second takedown of Bishop Watterson's Neal Krysty to win 4-3.

Limbert dominated Graham's Kaleb Morris 16-6 in his quarterfinal.

Buckeye then saw 157-pounder Kaden King win via a 13-2 major decision, followed by 175 pounder Eddie Neitenbach scoring a 19-3 technical fall.

Copley's Javaan Yarbrough, STVM's Bryce Skinner cruise into semifinals

Javaan Yarbrough's quest for his family's second state title remains on track. Yarbrough won his Division II quarterfinal match with Carrollton's Landon Jenkins 13-3 to reach the semifinals.

St. Vincent-St. Mary's Bryce Skinner's quest to repeat as champion is still going.

The 126-pound senior pinned Xavier Pierce of Jonathan Alder in the third period to move two matches away from another title.

Tyler Shellenbarger surges through to semifinals

Tyler Shellenbarger's first trip to state quickly ended up in the consolation bracket with a first-round loss.

His second trip to Columbus has taken a wonderfully different path, including Saturday's 7-3 win over Coldwater senior Will Fox to advance. With a five-point first period, Shellenbarger was in control from the start, and the Mogadore 215-pounder added a beautiful leg lift and drive down for a reversal to start the third en route to a 7-3 quarterfinal victory.

Keegan Sell relentless at 190

Garfield junior Keegan Sell (190) was as aggressive as ever, as relentless as ever, in his 11-0 win over Indian Lake sophomore Owen Pummel. Sell was on top and in control nearly the entire match to earn his third straight state semifinal berth.

In the other local quarterfinal match at 190, Rootstown senior Lane McKenzie fell 13-4 to drop into the consolation bracket.

Cody Coontz, Hunter Andel advance to semifinals at 165

At the same time, on adjacent mats, Garfield's Hunter Andel and Rootstown's Cody Coontz, both seniors, advanced to the 165-pound semifinals.

Coontz was catlike in his win over Alter freshman Rod Owens, seemingly a step faster the entire match for an 11-5 victory.

Andel, in a battle of top-four wrestlers in the state, got Dalton Wolfrum's leg up and got the kick down for a quick two points in the third, then locked Wolfrum up in the opening seconds of the second en route to an 8-2 victory.

Tuslaw freshman Kaden Lawson fell in the quarterfinals to Kyle Schroer, with the Troy Christian senior getting the pin in 3:08.
