Notre Dame’s history vs. Georgia Tech
Notre Dame and Georgia Tech don’t play every year but for different parts of history did, with the Fighting Irish usually getting the upper hand.
When the two programs meet on Saturday it will be the second year in a row they have as Notre Dame took last year’s meeting, 31-13 in Atlanta. That improved the Irish to 29-6-1 all-time against Georgia Tech.
The two programs first met in 1922 in a 13-3 Notre Dame win and would meet each year through 1929 with the Irish going 7-1 in that span. The two would then again resume the series for eight consecutive years from 1938-1945 with the Irish again taking seven-of-eight.
Notre Dame and Georgia Tech split one-offs in 1953 and 1959 before the two would meet in 12 of 15 seasons between 1967 and 1981 with the Irish going 10-1-1 in that span.
The two didn’t play from 1981 until the 1997 opener when Notre Dame Stadium was rededicated and the Bob Davie era officially began with a 17-13 Irish victory. The two would meet to conclude the 1998 season as Joe Hamilton and Georgia Tech would get the best of the Irish in the 1999 Gator Bowl, 35-28.
The two have met four times since 2006 with Notre Dame winning three of them, the 2007 opener being the exception as Georgia Tech rolled the Irish 33-3 that afternoon.
In all, Notre Dame and Georgia Tech have met 36 times with the Irish walking away victorious 29 times and tying once. Perhaps the most famous moment in the history of the series was barely noticed when it actually occurred.

That is, when walk-on Daniel “Rudy” Ruettiger entered the 1975 contest late and recorded a sack on the game’s final play. Ruettiger’s name wasn’t even mentioned by the announcer but that walk-on would be the centerpiece of the famous film 18 years later.
Meeting number-37 comes your way Saturday and if history has anything to say about it, the Irish should be celebrating yet another 10-win season shortly after the sun goes down in South Bend.
