Neighbors say speeding a problem in Springfield Township subdivision where 2 hit, killed
Residents of a Springfield Township subdivision that was the scene of a deadly pedestrian crash Wednesday say speeding and unsafe driving have been an issue for years.
Around 5 p.m., two women were walking and were struck by a car at the McKelvey Road and Terway Lane intersection. The pair, identified as Rosalind Givens, 53, and Jazmine Givens, 21, were mother and daughter, according to police, and both died at the hospital. The driver's condition was not available.
Springfield Township Police Captain Chris Niehaus told The Enquirer speeding complaints related to the area are issued sometimes, but speeding activity on the road varies throughout the year. Neighbors, on the other hand, say it's a consistent issue.
The Enquirer has filed a public records request for complaints and tickets issued on the seven residential streets surrounding the intersection.
In light of the fatal crash, residents are ready to end the racetrack-like conditions they've experienced for years.
"It's a freeway," said Nancy Holztrager, who lives near the intersection where the women were hit "We've lived here five years now, and we're shocked at how fast people drive."
McKelvey Road is a cross street of Winton Road. Most of the subdivision does not have sidewalks, including the area where the women were hit.
Terway Lane connects Genoa Drive and McKelvey Road. Holztrager said it's not uncommon for people to ignore the stop signs at both sides of Terway, whipping around corners and endangering pedestrians.
According to Ohio State Highway Patrol data, between February 2020 and February 2023, there have been six crashes on those three streets. No injuries were reported in those crashes.
Thomas and Lisa Tekulve, who also live near the scene of Wednesday's crash, said they have filed numerous complaints to police in the last 10 years. Lisa Tukulve attributes those complaints, combined with others issued by her neighbors, to some police presence and speed monitoring.
"But it's not anything consistent," she said. "People don't slow down."
Wednesday's crash remains under investigation.
