Neenah, Kaukauna 1-2 in high school girls basketball rankings; Brillion, Xavier top area boys teams
Here is the third edition of the Post-Crescent area girls and boys basketball rankings. Rankings are "pound-for-pound" with positioning determined by success and enrollment size.
GIRLS
*Through Wednesday
1, Neenah (9-0): Rockets beat Bay Port 73-53 on Dec. 19 to stay atop rankings with matchup at Hortonville looming this week. Next: Thursday vs. Green Bay Southwest.
2, Kaukauna (9-0): Ghosts move up spot in rankings after beating Hortonville and Kimberly. Team is led in scoring by Alexa Kinas (19.3) and Alana Zarneke (15.1). Next: Thursday vs. Germantown at Watertown Holiday Shootout.
3, Hortonville (9-1): Polar Bears' Kallie Peppler leads the team in rebounding (8.4) and is also second in scoring (13.6). Next: Saturday vs. Neenah.
4, Freedom (8-1): Irish a half-game ahead of Fox Valley Lutheran in the North Eastern standings and are coming off a 61-25 victory over Luxemburg-Casco. Next: Jan. 3 vs. Fox Valley Lutheran.
5, St. Mary Catholic (9-1): Zephyrs back in the rankings after a four-game winning streak, including a 61-35 victory over Howards Grove. Next: Thursday vs. Coleman.
Others: Fox Valley Lutheran (8-1), Brillion (8-1), New London (7-1), Chilton (7-2), Menasha (6-4), Appleton North (5-3), Appleton East (6-4), Kimberly (4-5), Wrightstown (5-5).
BOYS

1, Brillion (10-0): Lions beat Kettle Moraine Lutheran 73-61 in the WBY Shootout on Wednesday behind 21 points from Jeremy Lorenz. Next: Jan. 6 at Roncalli.
2, Xavier (7-0): Hawks tied atop Bay Conference with New London at 3-0. Next: Friday vs. Martin Luther at WBY Shootout at Concordia University.
3, St. Mary Catholic (9-0): Zephyrs get 87-84 victory over St. Mary's Springs on Wednesday. Senior guard/forward Cole Uhlenbrauck is the team's top scorer (24.9). Next: Friday vs. Newman Catholic at WBY Shootout at Concordia University.
4, Neenah (5-3): Rockets' losses have come to Wisconsin Lutheran, Joliet West (Ill.) and Brookfield Central. Next: Saturday at Hortonville.
5, Hortonville (6-1): Polar Bears make first appearance in rankings and are coming off a 70-50 victory over West De Pere. Team is led in scoring by August Maurer (19.8). Next: Saturday vs. Neenah.
