Is Montana Fouts starting for Alabama softball vs. Northwestern in Tuscaloosa Super Regional Game 1?

Montana Fouts is back for Alabama softball.

The Crimson Tide ace will pitch Game 1 of the Tuscaloosa Super Regional against Northwestern in the NCAA Tournament on Friday. She has been out since the SEC Tournament quarterfinals, where she left in the seventh inning. She was diagnosed with a hyper-extended left knee.

On Thursday, coach Patrick Murphy said Fouts would be available but did not disclose how he planned to use his pitchers. She threw bullpen sessions on Sunday of the Tuscaloosa Regional but did not appear in a game. She was available for only Sunday in the regional round, according to Murphy.

Fouts has thrown more than half of the Crimson Tide innings, a ratio that was only climbing going into the postseason. She led the nation with 311 strikeouts in the regular season. Fouts holds a 1.44 ERA and a 23-9 record.

Jaala Torrence stepped up without Fouts during the regional round with 18-plus innings, all scoreless. The gem was the complete game seven strikeout performance that clinched the regional on Sunday.
