Aug. 12—HIGH POINT — State Rep. Cecil Brockman, D-Guilford, announced Wednesday that he's seeking $9.5 million for High Point projects and $80 million in Guilford County through the budget proposal in the Republican-controlled House.

"After failing to pass a budget the last biennial, which left teachers and many other state employees with no pay increases, this budget is a step in the right direction in fulfilling North Carolina's obligations," said Brockman, who represents parts of High Point. "The resources provided by the budget will make a direct impact in my community, the district I represent."

The High Point projects include:

—John Coltrane Festival — $1 milion

—High Point Preservation Society to preserve Coltrane house — $250,000

—Welfare Reform Liaison Project — $300,000

—High Point Arts Council — $150,000

—Southwest Renewal Project — $100,000

—Greater High Point Food Alliance — $50,000

—Macedonia Family Resource Center — $50,000

—Open Door Ministries High Point — $50,000

—Q's Corner LLC for Puzzle Play initiative — $50,000

—Hayden-Harman Foundation — $1.2 million

—Business High Point, Inc. — $500,000

—City of High Point for High Point Equity Project — $1 million

—High Point Sensory Garden — $200,000

—High Point Furniture Market — $4.6 million

Leaders of the Republican-controlled House and Senate are trying to hash out differences in their 2021-22 state budget proposals. Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper has expressed skepticism about both proposals, and GOP N.C. General Assembly leaders would need some Democratic legislator votes to override any veto of a final budget.
