Monday Night Football’s New Theme Song: Chris Stapleton and Snoop Dogg Cover ‘In the Air Tonight’ — Watch Video
Are you ready for some (new) football (theme music)?
Monday Night Football will roll out a new theme song for this Monday’s Week 2 doubleheader on ESPN and ABC, with country star Chris Stapleton and hip-hop icon Snoop Dogg teaming up for a cover of the Phil Collins classic “In the Air Tonight.” Cindy Blackman Santana, known for her years drumming with Lenny Kravitz and Carlos Santana, provides the distinctively thundering drum beats from Collins’ original. The new theme song will debut before tonight’s Saints-Panthers matchup on ESPN at 7/6c, followed by the Browns-Steelers game on ABC at 8 pm. The classic instrumental theme “Heavy Action,” which has been a part of Monday Night Football since 1975, will still be heard following the new theme song. The Hank Williams Jr. song “All My Rowdy Friends Are Here on Monday Night” served as the MNF theme song from 1989 until 2011, when it was dropped after Williams made inflammatory comments about President Barack Obama on Fox News. The song was later brought back as MNF‘s theme from 2017 to 2019.
Fans will get more chances to hear Monday Night Football‘s new theme song on ABC this season, too. The network announced on Monday that it will simulcast 10 MNF games this fall alongside their usual ESPN airings, with the Oct. 2 Seahawks-Giants game being the first game to earn a new ABC airing. The decision helps to fill the gaping holes in ABC’s fall lineup as the dual Hollywood writers and actors strikes continue to drag on. (Check out the full Fall TV grid here.)
