Molly Neitzel leads Akron Zips over Eastern Michigan in MAC women's basketball
Senior Molly Neitzel scored a career-high 22 points and the University of Akron held on for a 72-70 victory Wednesday over Eastern Michigan in Mid-American Conference women's basketball at Rhodes Arena.
Reagan Bass chipped in 18 points, Layne Ferrell 13 points and seven rebounds and Dominique Camp 10 points and six assists for the Zips (15-9, 6-7), who allowed the game's first basket and then never trailed again.
Akron led 21-12 at the end of the first quarter and 35-25 at halftime and then held on. The Eagles (13-11, 5-8), who trailed 56-50 through three quarters, had a chance to tie the score with 17 seconds to play, but Tayra Eke missed the second of two free throws to leave the Zips clinging to a 71-70 lead.
Ferrell split two free throws with 10 seconds to play, and then came up with a steal to clinch the victory.
Irekpitan Ozzy-Momodu scored a game-high 26 points and Lachelle Austin 19 for Eastern Michigan.
