Michael Sheen's Prodigal Son has finally been renewed for a second season, eight months after its first episode premiered in the US.

Led by The Walking Dead actor Tom Payne, the drama series centres on Malcolm Bright, an FBI profiler who's keen to prove himself as an officer in the NYPD. He already has one up on his peers though – he has the ability to view crimes through the eyes of the wrongdoers.

It's a gift when it comes to the workplace, sure, but it comes at a price. Malcolm constantly worries his visions will lure him over to the dark side, leading him to follow in the footsteps of his serial killer father Dr Martin Whitly (Sheen).

"From the moment Prodigal Son premiered, fans have been captivated by the astounding performances [of] Tom Payne and Michael Sheen, as they go head-to-head in one of the most unique family relationships on television," Michael Thorn, Fox's president of entertainment, said in a statement.

Thorn went on to praise the "equally compelling" turns by Scandal's Bellamy Young, The Orville's Halston Sage, 24 actor Lou Diamond Phillips and the rest of the cast.

"Adding to these searing dynamics are the equally compelling portrayals from Bellamy Young, Lou Diamond Phillips, Halston Sage, as well as Chris Fedak and Sam Sklaver, who wrote the pilot.

"We'd like to thank our friends Greg Berlanti and Sarah Schechter, and everyone at Warner Bros Television for helping make a series that left everyone wanting more, and we're thrilled to have Prodigal Son return for our 2020-21 slate."

Prodigal Son airs on Fox in the US.
