Merritt Island volleyball set to play for state title Wednesday against Mosley High
Jordyn Patrick, Macy Reynolds, Macie Sinclair and Katie Callenberger were freshmen in 2018 when the Merritt Island volleyball team won its last state title.
Now, as seniors, they hope they can do it again.
The Mustangs will face Mosley High from Lynn Haven near Panama City in the Class 5A state championship game on Wednesday in Fort Myers.
This season was another outstanding one for the Mustangs as they went 24-6 while claiming another district championship and the No. 1 seed in their region.
Opening up the playoffs the Mustangs faced Okeechobee. They only dropped one set in the match and looked as if they were ready to make a deep playoff run.
They continued to roll and defeated Suncoast to set up a rematch of last season's region final match against Jensen Beach.
Jensen Beach was the team that ended the Mustangs' season last year, and based on both teams' records coming into the match, it was clear this was going to be another great matchup.

The senior core of Patrick, Reynolds, Sinclair and Callenberger have all been an integral part of the team's success. Patrick is leading the team in both aces (73) and assists (744), Reynolds leads the teams in digs (330), Sinclair leads the team in kills (256), and Callenberger leads the team in solo blocks (37) and has added 251 kills.
The Mustangs will need that senior core to continue to deliver against Mosley on Wednesday.
The Dolphins (22-8) defeated Seabreeze, Middleburg, Ridgeview and Vanguard on their path to the state championship game.
The Dolphins have multiple players who could be key players in the match.
Sophomore Jordan Ifred leads the team in aces with 67 and also leads the team in assist with 559, junior Alysia Fingall leads the team in kills with 291, and senior Haile Hallmon leads the team in digs with 552.
With both teams playing some of their best volleyball right now, this match should be another exciting battle. The match will be played on Wednesday at 1 p.m. at the Suncoast Credit Union Arena in Fort Myers.
