McDonald's Grimace Birthday Shake has a mysterious flavor, but we may have figured it out
Remember Ronald McDonald's good friend Grimace — think Barney the dinosaur except shaped like a giant mushroom with hands.
Well, Grimace is back in a big way this month as McDonald's celebrates his birthday. The franchise launched a "Grimace Birthday Meal and Shake," which includes a choice of McNuggets or a Big Mac; a medium french fry; and a purple shake, which according to McDonald’s, is inspired by the iconic color and sweetness of Grimace.
What is Grimace?
According to McDonald's, “Our timeless bestie has become a fan-favorite known for his signature fuzzy purple look, friendly and playful personality, love for shakes, and of course — ambiguous nature. What exactly is Grimace? Perhaps we’ll never know.”

Does a Grimace shake look good?
If you flipped it over, it would look a lot like Grimace wearing a white tutu (there's whipped cream on top of it). If you don't mind consuming something that's creamy and purple, it looks inviting.
What is in a Grimace shake?
Ingredients: sugar, water, corn syrup, glycerin, vegetable juice (color), modified food starch, natural flavor, citric acid, potassium sorbate and sodium benzoate (preservatives).
What does a Grimace shake taste like?
Opinions vary from purple Fruit Loops to a grape/berry hybrid.
After tasting it, it has a distinct blueberry flavor. Not of fresh blueberries, but rather an artificial blueberry flavor. It's very smooth and while having corn syrup in the drink, there isn't an overwhelming sweet taste.
Will adults like the Grimace shake?
Children are the target audience for the shake and it should be a big winner with them.
"It's one of the best shakes I've ever had," my 10-year-old daughter said.
But what about moms and dads. Everyone's taste buds are different and you know going in that McDonald's isn't a fancy, shake-centric restaurant. Given that, it's not bad. Not the best shake I've ever had, but I don't regret trying it.
Where does the Grimace shake rank vs. other specialty shakes?
McDonald's has two specialty shakes that are geared toward holidays — the Shamrock and the Egg Nog shake. While the Grimace shake isn't bad, it's in third behind the other two.
