Marvin Jones Jr. decides he won’t follow his father’s footsteps to Tallahassee
The best defense in the nation is adding one of the best defensive prospects in the nation.
American Heritage five-star defensive end Marvin Jones Jr. signed with Georgia on Wednesday at a signing ceremony at his school, which was broadcast on ESPN2.
“It feels great,” Jones said. “It’s kind of a stress-reliever. I’m just ready to work and get ready for Georgia.”
Jones said he wants to get on the field quickly at Georgia, and the ability to do that was a major reason why he picked the Bulldogs.
“I would say the ability to play early [drew me to Georgia],” Jones said. “The school has so much history and, obviously, they’re on a path to win right now.”
Jones chose the Bulldogs over Alabama and Florida State, even though his father, Marvin Jones Sr., was a star linebacker for the Seminoles.
“Honestly, I don’t think him going to school really played any part in where I chose to go,” Jones said.
Jones had a solid season for American Heritage, notching 46 tackles, six tackles for loss and five sacks this season. Georgia’s defense is currently No. 1 in the nation in scoring defense and No. 2 in total defense, and playing in that defense appealed to the Patriots star.
“I’d love to see myself as a Bulldog, getting after the quarterback,” Jones said
Jones said he knew Georgia would be his pick after he visited the campus in Athens in October. He followed the first, unofficial visit with an official visit last weekend.
“I went the first time [and] I kind of fell in love with it,” Jones said.
