ORIGINAL – Monroe County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man wanted in the fatal shooting of a Crisp County deputy after a chase on Interstate 475 early Wednesday morning.

Monroe County Sheriff Brad Freeman said deputies caught the man, later identified as Croshawn Cross, 25, from Unadilla at about 4 a.m. on I-475 near Zebulon Road after he led police on a chase through several Georgia counties.

The man was driving a sheriff’s office patrol car stolen from Crisp County, where just 20 minutes prior he fatally shot a sheriff’s deputy, according to a Facebook post from the Crisp County Sheriff’s Office.

At about 3:40 a.m., a Crisp County deputy pulled over a car and ran its plates, discovering it had been stolen, according to the Facebook post. The deputy also learned the driver of the car was wanted for “numerous burglaries,” according to a video from Crisp County.

When the deputy approached the car, the driver allegedly shot him and stole his patrol car before leading police on the chase, the post said. The deputy later died from his injuries at a local hospital.

Freeman told the Telegraph that the accused left the Monroe County Detention Center at about 7 a.m. this morning to be sent back to Crisp County.

The Telegraph will add to this story as more information becomes available.
