Main Street crash causes partial building collapse, Green Bay police report
GREEN BAY - A vehicle crash Sunday night caused a partial collapse of the Main Street Commons building at 1263 Main St. with at least one person injured, according to the Green Bay Police Department.
The crash caused a portion of the facade to fall from the building, police said.
James Brick, owner of the Main Street Commons building, said the car hit a "perfect spot" on one side of the building that made facade and part of the roof to collapse.
"We are hypothesizing demolishing that part of the building to let the other tenants back in," he said.
Right now he and other tenants of the building are waiting for an structural engineer to come and inspect the structure and give directions on how to shore up the building.
"Then they are going to start working on shoring the building today and clearing the street," Brick said.
Currently there are 14 businesses that operate inside the Main Street Commons, like the Main Salon & Spa, State Farm insurance and beauty spa REN.
"I'm stressed with anxiety, but it's part of life I guess," Brick said.
Officers were dispatched to the scene at 10:45 p.m. Sunday after a minivan crashed into Main Street Commons.
Police said the crash caused nonlife-threatening injuries to the driver, a 29-year-old Green Bay woman, who was taken into custody, along with the passenger of the vehicle, a 27-year-old Oneida man. Police said witnessed reported that reckless driving as a cause in the crash.
One of the businesses at the building, The Main Salon & Spa, said in a social media post they would be closed until further notice and part of the salon would be torn down.
Other businesses, R.E.N. Rejuvenation and AuNaturale Cosmetics, were affected by the crash.
Main Street between St. George Street and North Irwin Avenue is closed for an indefinite amount of time. Police recommend drivers use an alternative route on University Avenue, East Walnut Street and East Mason Street.
