Lucas Giolito exits after six no-hit innings against the Yankees
NEW YORK - In the smoky, hazy thick atmosphere at Yankee Stadium, Chicago White Sox starter Lucas Giolito tossed six no-hit innings against the Yankees.
But the right-hander was at 100 pitches and was not allowed to continue a bid for his second career no-hitter.
White Sox manager Pedro Grifol replaced Giolito with veteran releiver Joe Kelly to open the home seventh, with Chicago leading 3-0 on a pair of homers by No. 9 hitter Seby Zavala off Yanks' starter Clarke Schmidt.
Chicago's bid for a bullpen-aided no-hitter was broken up with two out in the seventh on Isiah Kiner-Falefa's gift, RBI double, which dropped in center field as Luis Robert Jr. stopped his pursuit, with ex-Yankee left fielder Andrew Benintendi nearby.
Through six innings, Tuesday night, the Yankees had managed to reach base three times on walks, including back-to-back two-out walks by Anthony Rizzo and Josh Donaldson in the first inning.
Yankees slugger and reigning AL MVP Aaron Judge was on the bench and likely unavailable Tuesday night, due to a bruised right big toe.
It was not known before gametime whether Judge would require a stint on the 10-day injury list; he was to be examined by the club's team physician, Dr. Christopher Ahmad.
Giolito's no-hitter came on Aug. 25, 2020, against the Pittsburgh Pirates. It was the White Sox' 19th no-hitter in team history.
