LSU baseball takes Game 3 to sweep Missouri

It was a busy day in Baton Rouge on Saturday as the LSU Tigers were looking for a series sweep of Missouri, and they got it with an 8-6 win in Game 3.

Samuel Dutton got the start on the mound, but after a first-inning error, Missouri hit a two-run home run to take an early 2-0 lead. Dutton had his shortest outing of the year as he was pulled from the game after pitching only 1.2 innings while allowing three hits, two runs and one walk with one strikeout.

But in the bottom of the third inning, Brayden Jobert picked up where he left off Friday night with a solo home run to get the Tigers on the board.

That homer was followed by an RBI single for Josh Berry to tie the game 2-2 as we headed to the fourth inning.

In the bottom of the fourth, LSU took its first lead of the ballgame as they plated three runs. It started with a Tyler McManus two-RBI double to make it 4-2 and that was followed by a Josh Pearson RBI single to make it 5-2.

In the top of the fifth inning, Missouri cut into the Tigers’ lead as it plated a run on an RBI single to make it 5-3. In the bottom of the fifth, LSU got that run right back as Jacob Berry hit a home run of his own to extend the lead to 6-3 heading to the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the seventh, Tre Morgan hit an RBI double to score Berry and make it 7-3 Tigers.

In the top of the eighth inning, Missouri scored a run on a sacrifice fly to cut the lead to 7-4. Then with runners on the corners and one out, Josh Thompson made an error on a would-be ground ball and another run scored for Mizzou.

Devin Fontenot came in to pitch, and he walked a run home to make it 7-6. Riley Cooper came in to pitch with the bases loaded and two outs, and he got the first batter he faced to ground out to save the lead. In the bottom of the eighth, LSU got an insurance run as Pearson hit an RBI single to make it 8-6.

Cooper came back out to pitch the top of the ninth inning and try and close out the game and the series. He struck out the first batter, the second batter lined out and the third batter grounded out to end the game as the Tigers won 8-6 and swept Missouri.

With the win, LSU now has a record of 27-12 (10-8 SEC). The Tigers will play at New Orleans on Tuesday night before playing their next SEC series against Georgia next weekend at Alex Box Stadium.
