  • And the winner for Best New Musical is...

The Outsiders. It wasn't exactly an upset, but the winner honestly could've been either The Outsiders, Hell's Kitchen (which had one more nomination) or the buzzy Suffs.

Still, The Outsiders had consistently gotten the loudest applause of the night, garnered an upset win for its director, and was given the honor of the last showcase spot out of the nominated works.

Expect tickets to be harder to get from here on out.

  • Maleah Joi Moon, Jonathan Groff win Best Leading Actors for a Musical

Both Maleah Joi Moon, who plays the lead in Hell’s Kitchen, and Jonathan Groff, who anchored Merrily We Roll Along, were overcome with emotion as they accepted their awards, .

Moon gave a special thanks to her parents. "Because this is for you and we did this together. I love you more than words," she said.

Groff noted that he used to record and rewatch the Tonys on VHS tapes and added, "To actually be able to be a part of making theater and to be able to watch the work of this incredible, incredible community has been the greatest gift of my life."

  • In Memoriam honors those Broadway lost

Singer Nicole Scherzinger sang "What I Did For Love" from A Chorus Line as the In Memoriam played. The honorees included Alan Arkin, Michael Gambon, Treat Williams, Louis Gossett Jr., Ron Cephas Jones and, of course, Chita Rivera.

  • Sarah Paulson wins Best Leading Actress in a Play

The TV mainstay won for her role in Appropriate (which earlier in the night won Best Play Revival), defeating a roster of notable actresses for the honor, including Betsy Aidem (Prayer of the French Republic), Jessica Lange (Mother Play), Rachel McAdams (Mary Jane) and Amy Ryan (Doubt).

  • 'Merrily We Roll Along' wins Best Musical Revival

Despite the plaudits that fellow nominee (and Eddie Redmayne-helmed) Cabaret at the Kit Kat Club received during its London run, this award was always Merrily's to lose. The Stephen Sondheim-penned musical follows three friends over the course of 20 years and tells the story of how three friends' lives and friendship change over the course of 20 years and moves backwards in time. It already garnered Daniel Radcilffe his first Tony earlier in the night.

  • Angelina Jolie introduces 'The Outsiders'

The actress is one of the producers of Best New Musical nominee The Outsiders, based on S.E. Hinton's eponymous 1967 coming-of-age novel (which later inspired the 1983 film that starred Patrick Swayze, Matt Dillon, Rob Lowe, Diane Lane, Tom Cruise, Emilio Estevez and more).

"To any young person, any person feeling on the outside, you are not wrong to see what is unfair, you are not wrong to value your own path," she said, before the show's cast performed a mesmerizing medley of its songs.

  • Hillary Clinton introduces 'Suffs'

As one of its producers, the former Secretary of State came out to introduce Suffs, a Best New Musical nominee.

After noting that the musical is about "the suffragettes who fought so valiantly for so long to give women in our country the right to vote," Clinton added, "It’s almost impossible to think about what a challenge that was. But now it’s an election year and we need to be reminded about how important it is to vote."

The Suffs compa then came out to perform "Keep Marching."

With a record-making 13 Tony nominations — the most ever for a play — the winner of this category was never in doubt. A fiction based loosely on Fleetwood Mac creating their seminal album Rumours, the play has achieved critical acclaim.

  • The late Chita Rivera honored

The show honored Broadway great Chita Rivera, who died in January. She originated the roles of Velma Kelly in Chicago (1975), the lead role in Kiss of the Spider Woman (1993) and Anita in the original West Side Story (1957) — the role for which show host Ariana DeBose later won an Oscar in 2021.

  • Why is 'Gutenberg!' in the Musical Revival category?

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 16: (L-R) Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad speak onstage during The 77th Annual Tony Awards at David H. Koch Theater at Lincoln Center on June 16, 2024 in New York City. (Photo by Theo Wargo/Getty Images for Tony Awards Productions)

Honestly, not even its stars purportedly know. Andrew Rannells and Josh Gad came onstage as their Gutenberg! The Musical! characters (Doug Simon and Bud Davenport, who wrote a highly inaccurate musical about printing press inventor Johannes Gutenberg) to explain what a revival is (basically a reproduction of a previously performed work of art).

And then basically implied that they don't know why Gutenberg! was put in the Best Musical Revival category, pulling up a Tony Awards rule that said something that doesn't belong in the New Musical category MAY be eligible in the appropriate Best Revival category if it's determined to be a Classic.

As Rannells (as Doug Simon) said, "Really, it’s just an honor to be eligible."

  • 'Suffs' wins for Best Original Score

Shaina Taub seemed shocked that she won for Suffs, a musical about the American women's suffrage movement, considering her competition included Will Butler (of history-making nominee Stereophonic) and Jamestown Revival and Justin Levine (of fan-favorite The Outsiders). The other nominees included Adam Guettel (Days of Wine and Roses) and David Byrne and Fatboy Slim (Here Lies Love).

  • Kecia Lewis wins Featured Actress for 'Hell’s Kitchen'

The Featured Actress in a Musical winner drew some of the biggest laughs of the night as she tried to open her phone to pull up her speech.

"People, stop texting me. Jesus," she muttered.

On top of thanking the usual suspects, she thanked her Ear-Nose-Throat doctor because he "keeps this voice alive and well."

She added that this was "the moment I dreamed of for 40 years."

  • One-time 'Harry Potter' actor now a Tony Award winner

Daniel Radcliffe is definitely leaving "Harry Potter" in his past, taking home his first Tony Award for Best Featured Actor in a Musical. He earned plaudits for his role as playwright Charley Kringas in the musical revival of Stephen Sondheim's Merrily We Roll Along.

As he thanked his castmates and fellow nominees Lindsay Mendez and Jonathan Groff, Groff could be seen tearing up.

  • 'Stereophonic,' 'Outsiders win for Best Direction

Daniel Aukin took him the award for Stereophonic in the Play category, beating out Anne Kauffman (Mary Jane), Kenny Leon (Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch), Lila Neugebauer (Appropriate) and Whitney White (Jaja’s African Hair Braiding).

Danya Taymor, the niece of Tony-winning director Julie Taymor, won in the Musical category in an upset for "The Outsiders. She lauded the record number of women nominees (taking four out of the five spots), as well as S.E. (Susan Eloise) Hinton, who wrote the book that the musical is based on at the age of 16.

  • Kara Young wins Best Featured Actress in a Play

NEW YORK, NEW YORK - JUNE 16: Kara Young accepts the Best Performance by an Actress in a Featured Role in a Play award for

Kara Young earned the win for Best Featured Actress in a Play for Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch. She paid homage to the late Ossie Davis, who wrote the 1961 play and acted in its eponymous role, and Ruby Dee, Ossie's real-life wife who originated Young's role.

  • 'Stereophonic' actor beats out castmates for award

Stereophonic actor Will Brill nabbed the award for Best Featured Actor in a Play, beating out castmates Eli Gelb and Tom Pecinka, as well as TV stars Jim Parsons of Big Bang fame (here nominated for Mother Play) and Corey Stoll, nominated for Appropriate.

Stereophonic, said to be loosely based on Fleetwood Mac recording its 1977 album Rumours, made history as the most Tony Award-nominated play with 13 nominations.

  • Alicia Keys brings Jay-Z onstage to perform

Hells's Kitchen is the first of the Best New Musical nominees to showcase its songs. The semi-autobiographical jukebox musical tells the story of Keys's upbringing in Manhattan in the 1990s. They performed a medley of her greatest hits, including “Empire State of Mind” with the rapper.

  • Jeremy Strong wins Best Leading Actor of a Play

Succession actor Jeremy Strong takes home the first major award of the night, winning Best Leading Actor of a Play for An Enemy of the People.

He beat out fellow nominees William Jackson Harper (Uncle Vanya), Leslie Odom, Jr. (Purlie Victorious: A Non-Confederate Romp Through the Cotton Patch), Liev Schreiber (Doubt) and Michael Stuhlbarg (Patriots).
