What we learned from Mike Bobinski's press conference regarding Purdue football coaching search

WEST LAFAYETTE - Athletic director Mike Bobinski knew this day would come.

He's a realist and Jeff Brohm departing from his position as Purdue University's head football coach to assume the same role at his alma mater Louisville was always going to happen.

It was just a matter of when.

At about 11:45 a.m. Wednesday, it did.

Brohm informed Bobinski that the Boilermakers would need to find his successor.

Bobinski conducted a press conference Thursday to discuss the situation going forward, other than who the Boilermakers might covet for the job.

Here's three things that came from that press conference:

Citrus Bowl coach

As was reported on Wednesday, offensive coordinator/quarterbacks coach Brian Brohm will lead the Boilermakers in their Jan. 2. Citrus Bowl game against LSU.

It is expected the he will join Louisville's coaching staff after the bowl game. Bobinski said he will not be surprised if that happens.

Co-defensive coordinator Mark Hagen will coach the defense in the Citrus Bowl.

Coaching departures

Three members of the Purdue football coaching staff already have joined Jeff Brohm's Louisville staff.

Co-defensive coordinator/secondary coach Ron English, who previously was defensive coordinator at Louisville while Brohm was the program's offensive coordinator, will return to the Cardinals.

Receivers coach Garrick McGee and running backs coach Chris Barclay also are no longer with Purdue's staff. Coincidentally, or not, Purdue lost two running backs who were verbal commitments for its 2023 recruiting class. Keyjuan Brown, from Georgia, and Terrell Washington Jr., from Texas, both re-opened their recruitment on Wednesday.

Timeline

Bobinski did not give a defined timetable to hire a new coach.

Obviously Purdue needs to move quickly, but also perform its due diligence to get the best possible hire. National signing day's early period for football begins Dec. 21. Expect a hire before then with enough time to retain current recruits and add others.

Bobinski, whose first major move as Purdue athletic director was to hire Jeff Brohm in 2016, said the football program is in a much better place now than it was then, because of the job Brohm and staff has done over the past six seasons.
