Lancaster Country Club property sells for $1.7 million
LANCASTER — The Lancaster Country Club property has sold for $1.7 million to a group of 26 local citizens.
According to a media release, Leonard Gorsuch, Chris Smith, Kent Swinehart, Norman "Pip" Ogilvie, and former Lancaster mayor Dave Smith are among the managing members of the newly-formed Lancaster Golf Club, LLC.
Information obtained from the Fairfield County Auditor's website indicates the sale of 3100 Country Club Drive occurred on Nov. 17 with the property transfer taking place Nov. 23.
In the release, Gorsuch said the Lancaster Golf Club hopes to preserve a community staple.
"It has been operating for 112 years, and it has a rich history and tradition," he said. "We want to ensure that generations to come have the opportunity to experience the course and make memories of their own."
According to the release, the new owners have taken steps to "winterize" the course and pool, with plans for the property to reopen in the spring as a public course, with memberships being available for purchase.
Plans for the clubhouse pool, tennis courts, and dining details are still being worked on
Previous ownership of the Country Club announced on Aug. 12 the property had sold, and that the club would close by Sept. 15. Amenities such as the banquet hall and pool closed in the weeks leading up to the club's final day of operation, and the golf course was briefly opened to the public.
Former owner Mike Hubbard said at the time of the announcement that he could not comment on the club's sale.
The sale of the Country Club continues a trend in Lancaster, being the third golf course in the area to sell within nearly six months of each other.
Pleasant Valley Golf Course sold on June 9 to a housing developer for $1 million, while Valley View Golf Course and Swim Club sold for $710,000 to Barry and Jennifer Rhonemus.
Additional details on The Club's plans will be released when they are finalized, according to the release.
The Club's golf course has seen multiple facelifts throughout its lifespan. Built in 1909, the nine-hole course was redesigned by Scottish golf architect Donald Ross in 1926, according to the release. The second-nine was added 33 years later in 1959 and were redesigned by The Donald Ross Society in the 1980s to replicate Ross's style of design.
