Lady Gamecock basketball streaks to 6-0 in region
It was a story of two different teams as the girls and boys basketball teams opened the 2022 portion of their schedule last week. The stories were the Lady Gamecocks rolling past both McIntosh County Academy and Jenkins County while the Gamecocks, able to dress out only eight players, fell hard to the same teams. Both nights’ contests were on the road.
After the weekend the Lady Gamecocks were 10-2 and 6-0 in Region 3A while the boys dropped to 5-6 and 3-3 in region action.
The upcoming schedule finds the teams headed to Wrightsville on January 14 for a nonregion game with Johnson County, hosting a return region engagement with MCA on January 15 (girls to start at 5:00), and a boys-only contest with Savannah Classical on January 19. Classical is actually in Region 3A but plays nonregion.
Saying “It was ugly” with emphasis on the ugly, Head Coach Stephanie Davis was not pleased after her team’s 36-25 win over homestanding Jenkins County Saturday night. An 8-8 first quarter against the 4-8 Lady Eagles set the tone for the night. Taking a 19-13 lead into the dressing room, the Red and White kept the lead but were never able to pull away. Only Asia Roberson hit for double figures with 13. Alailah Scott had eight rebounds while Roberson and Ta’miyah Tyler had seven each. Scott also contributed five steals and four assists.
Davis’ disappointment on Saturday night may have had something to do with the way the team played on Friday night in Darien. With her troops jumping out to a 19-4 lead after eight minutes, she was able to empty the bench before the night was over in the 63-30 victory. Seven different players scored, including three in double figures: Scott (12), Tyler (15), and Ta’myia Maynor (14). Tyler had nine rebounds to fall just short of a double-double. Scott had seven steals and Roberson six.
For Arthur Davis, whose boys finished the 2021 portion of the schedule with a share of first place, the new year began with lower case letters. In Darien on Friday night the Buccaneers downed SCHS 70-46 while in Millen on Saturday the Eagles took the measure of the Red and White by a 55-36 margin.
