Kelly Ripa's usual routine is a bit off this week. (Honestly, same!) Instead of heading into the studio, she prepped for Live with Kelly and Ryan morning show hosting duties from home. Kelly, 49, also snapped a mirror selfie while getting ready.

The co-host shared the photo on her Instagram Story with a joke about her roots. Her face is blocked by her phone, so all the focus is on her hair parted right down the middle. Her blonde hair is wet, and right at the roots is an oh-so-subtle hint of paler strands. There are only a few white-ish gray hairs visible if you look very closely, but Kelly is definitely keeping an eye on her roots. She included the text, "root watch week one," over the photo.

FYI: hair typically grows a half-inch a month, but because grays' growth cells are twice as active, they sprout faster, according to a study published in The British Journal of Dermatology. That explains why keeping those suckers covered means dyeing them every four weeks. Yep, the countdown is on.

Experts do have some DIY tricks up their sleeve, though. For blondes, New York City stylist and colorist Greg Ruggeri previously told Women's Health powders are best. "Sprays and markers have too much pigment, which makes fair hair look flat," he says. Powders (like ColorWow Root Cover-Up, $35, ulta.com) give a finer dusting. Lock them in with a mist of hair spray.

For all other colors, aerosols are the way to go for full root coverage. (Ruggeri's fave: Gray Away Temporary Root Concealer, $10, amazon.com) These products carry the highest pigment load, so they're able to blend into the darkest strands.

Tbd what Kelly's root plan of attack is yet.
