The Kansas City Chiefs placed wide receiver John Ross III, the Cincinnati Bengals' first-round draft pick (ninth overall) in the 2017 NFL Draft, on the reserve/retired list Wednesday.

Ross did not play last season. He had 11 receptions for 224 yards with a touchdown in 10 games for the New York Giants in 2021.

Ross signed with the Giants in March 2021 when the Bengals declined to pick up his fifth-year option. He had requested a trade in October 2020.

He had 51 catches for 733 yards with 10 touchdowns over four seasons in Cincinnati.

The Bengals selected Ross one pick before the Chiefs took quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and three picks before the Houston Texans selected Deshaun Watson, now the Cleveland Browns' starting QB. The Pittsburgh Steelers took linebacker T.J. Watt 30th.

Ross ran a 40-yard dash in 4.22 seconds at the NFL Combine.
