Jazz rookie Walker Kessler explains on-court strengths in training camp
Walker Kessler emerged as a great defensive player in college at Auburn and it is that ability that the 22nd pick wants to showcase this season with the Utah Jazz.
Kessler was named the Naismith Defensive Player of the Year last season after averaging 11.4 points, 8.1 rebounds, 4.6 blocked shots and 1.1 steals in 34 games. He led the SEC in blocks and ranked second among all Division I players.
The 7-foot-1 center had quite an offseason, from getting traded from the Minnesota Timberwolves to missing summer league due to a toe injury. He has had the opportunity now to settle in with the Jazz and is looking to prove himself on the court.
His size is one trait that he believes makes him stand out.
I think that from the college level to the professional level, it is still basketball. Obviously, the talent is a lot better but as far as feeling the game, making the right play, being in the right spot, cutting to the basket and slashing. I think I have my size is something you can’t teach so being in the right spot, getting rebounds and blocking shots. I think I have a lot to learn. Obviously, I’ve only played in two preseason games but I’m just taking it a step at a time.
Kessler credits his film study to be able to step in and have a smooth transition to the NBA. He is working to understand the different angles of the game and when to help out on defense, but the game reps have been very helpful for him.
He is averaging seven points, 4.5 rebounds and one assist through his first two preseason games. He has played off of the bench to this point, which will likely be his role to start the season until he can get more reps after missing summer league.
The 21-year-old has been among the standouts in training camp to this point and looks to be a player that can make an impact on both ends of the floor. It may only be a matter of time until he emerges as a key player for the Jazz on the court.
Utah returns to play next on Tuesday versus the San Antonio Spurs.
