About the Jaguars
• The Jaguars snapped their five-game losing streak last week in beating Las Vegas but now have to bust a five-game losing streak against the Chiefs. They last beat Kansas City on Nov. 8, 2009 in Jacksonville, a 24-21 victory, and last won in Kansas City on Sept. 15, 2002, 23-16.
• Statistically, the Jaguars' two main attributes at midseason are running and stopping the run. They are seven in the NFL in both categories and third in the AFC in rushing offense and fifth in rushing defense. Behind Travis Etienne, who is fifth in the league with 680 yards, the Jaguars are averaging 146.8 yards per game and giving up 105.1 per game.
• The Jags have had some issues containing mobile quarterbacks this season. Daniel Jones of the New York Giants ran for 107 yards and Denver's Russell Wilson and Philadelphia's Jalen Hurts picked up good yardage at crucial times in the game. Mahomes has gained 176 yards and averages 6.5 yards per carry, and has a knack for keeping plays alive with his mobility.
About the Chiefs
• There have been signs this season that quarterback Patrick Mahomes misses his old deep threat in Tyreek Hill but he can't be missing him that much. Mahomes leads the NFL in passing yardage (2,605) and touchdown passes (21) and with tight end Travis Kelce and wide receiver JuJu Smith-Schuster, he has enough weapons for the Chiefs to be first in the NFL in passing, second in total offense and first in scoring (30.3 points per game).
• The Chiefs have struggled a bit on the other side of the ball and are 20th in the NFL in total defense and 24th against the pass. They're making up for it with their stingy run defense (fifth), led by tackles Chris Jones and Derrick Nnadi. The Jags may back off the run a bit, and go after cornerback L'Jarrius Sneed, who has been listed as questionable on the injury reports. He's still pretty good even if slowed a bit.
• Andy Reid's coaching tree has branches in Jacksonville. Jaguars coach Doug Pederson played for Reid one season in Philadelphia, then coached under him with the Eagles and the Chiefs. Defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell played and coached for Reid at Philadelphia.
Key Matchup
Jaguars LB Devin Lloyd vs. Chiefs TE Travis Kelce
Kelce, in no surprise, leads all NFL tight ends in receptions (57), yards (659) and is tied for first in the league with Davante Adams and Stefon Diggs in touchdown receptions (seven.).
Lloyd, as an inside linebacker, will often be on pass coverage against Kelce but Jaguars defensive coordinator Mike Caldwell said the team will devise ways to get the rookie help. Either way, there will come a time or two (likely in the red zone) when it will be just Lloyd vs. Kelce and a play will have to be made.
