Jackson State football player Willie Gaines to enter the transfer portal
Jackson State wide receiver Willie Gaines announced on his Twitter account Thursday that he is entering the transfer portal.
Gaines posted that he would enter on Saturday, the day the portal reopens and the day Jackson State is playing its spring game.
"Thank you to all my coaches and teammates during my time at Jackson State University," Gaines wrote. "Also, want to thank the fans. I really felt really at home during my time here. However, I will be entering the transfer portal on April 15, with two years of eligibility left."

Gaines said one of the reasons he came to Jackson State was to be coached by Deion Sanders. He said he also liked the idea of attending an HBCU and being a part of something new.
Gaines played in 13 games with Jackson state. He had 27 receptions for 446 yards with five touchdowns. His best game of the 2022 season came against Southern when he had seven receptions. Gaines was also used as a punt returner, averaging 8 yards on 21 returns.
Sanders left Jackson State in December to become the football coach at Colorado. Wide receivers coach T.C. Taylor was promoted to replace Sanders about week later.
Jackson State plays its Blue and White spring game at 3 p.m. Saturday at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
