IU basketball recruiting: Hoosiers in contact with 2023 4-star Simeon Wilcher
Update --- Monday, June 12: Simeon Wilcher committed to St. John's.
IU basketball has contacted 2023 4-star recruit Simeon Wilcher, a source told IndyStar. The connection was previously reported by 24/7 High School Hoops.
Wilcher, who had been set to attend North Carolina, recently reopened his recruitment. In the 2023 class, he is ranked as the No. 34 overall prospect and No. 7 combo guard, according to the 247Sports Composite.
According to 24/7 High School Hoops, Wilcher has heard from Seton Hall, Texas Tech, Xavier, Louisville, Indiana, Georgetown, California, Georgia Tech and St. John's.
Indiana is in need of a guard for the 2023-24 season. The Hoosiers have veterans Xavier Johnson and Trey Galloway in the backcourt, along with a younger wave of players with high ceilings, but who are relatively unproven at the college level, such as CJ Gunn, Jakai Newton and Gabe Cupps.
IU coach Mike Woodson and his staff have done admirable work this offseason. The Hoosiers lost a lot of last season's production, including star Trayce Jackson-Davis, Jalen Hood-Schifino, Race Thompson, Miller Kopp, Tamar Bates and Jordan Geronimo. But IU has added some talented pieces in the transfer portal, such as Payton Sparks (Ball State), Kel'el Ware (Oregon) and Anthony Walker (Miami, Fla.) to brighten the outlook of the 2023-24 season.
IU also landed 2023 5-star Mackenzie Mgbako, who was originally supposed to attend Duke before reopening his recruitment and deciding on the Hoosiers. This is especially of note here because Mgbako and Wilcher were teammates at Roselle Catholic High School in New Jersey.
IU has one scholarship available for the 2023-24 season.
