Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds elected chair of Republican Governors Association

Iowa Gov. Kim Reynolds has been chosen to lead the national group that helps elect Republican governors around the country.

Reynolds will chair the Republican Governors Association in 2023. She was chosen as chair Wednesday by her fellow Republican governors at the RGA's annual conference in Orlando, Florida.

“Last week, we saw Republican incumbent governors resoundingly re-elected across the country as voters chose another term of lower taxes, more jobs, backing the blue, and keeping parents in their child’s education,” Reynolds said in a news release.

Reynolds won reelection to a second full term earlier this month by nearly 19 percentage points, defeating Democrat Deidre DeJear and Libertarian Rick Stewart.

Reynolds is currently the association's vice chair. She takes over as chair from Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey and Nebraska Gov. Pete Ricketts.

Governor's races in Louisiana, Kentucky and Mississippi are on the ballot in 2023, during Reynolds' term as the group's chair.

In her statement, Reynolds pointed to Republican success in flipping the governor's office in Nevada this year and Virginia last year.

"I’m honored my colleagues have trusted me to lead the RGA as we work to ensure voters in Louisiana and Kentucky are given that same chance at a better future and Mississippi gives Governor Tate Reeves the second term he’s earned," she said.

Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee will serve as the group's vice chair in 2023.Earlier this week, Reynolds' chief of staff, Sara Craig Gongol, was named the Republican Governors Association's executive director. Craig Gongol will serve a four-year term in that role beginning in January.
