Hurricane Ian: Savannah-area public and private schools announce storm plans

As Hurricane Ian makes landfall in southwest Florida on Wednesday and Coastal Georgia prepares for its impacts beginning Thursday, Savannah-area private and public schools announce plans for the rest of the week:

Benedictine Military School

The school announced on Wednesday that it will close Thursday and Friday in the wake of the storm and all school activities are canceled.

Savannah Classical Academy

On its Facebook page, Savannah Classical Academy announced Thursday will be a half-day for students. The school will close Friday.

Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School

Coastal Empire Montessori Charter School will close for the next two days, and plans to reopen Monday, Oct. 3.

Savannah-Chatham Public Schools

Savannah-Chatham County Public Schools announced students will have virtual learning on Thursday and Friday in anticipation of severe storms.

"While all buildings and District facilities will be closed for in-person activities, certain staff who are designated by their immediate supervisor will be required to report to work during this closure," SCCPSS officials said in a news release.

Instructions for remote learning will be provided by the school or the child's teacher. Additionally, the district's online learning platform ItsLearning, Microsoft Teams, and/or Google Classroom is expected to have information for parents and students regarding completing assignments.

Teachers will be available online as conditions allow, the district said.

"The School District will maintain regular contact with the Chatham Emergency Management Agency to monitor storm impacts. Facility and operational assessments will be made throughout the weekend to ensure the safety of all buildings," district officials said in a news release.

School operations are expected to resume Monday, Oct. 3.

St. Andrew's School

After receiving the most updated forecasts, St. Andrew's will be closed on Thursday and Friday due to the potential risk of high winds and coastal flooding beginning Thursday.
