How does the iPhone 15 stack up against the iPhone 14?

The iPhone 15 is here.

With much anticipation, Apple debuted the newest iteration of its ubiquitous smartphone at the tech giant’s “Wonderlust” event on Sept. 12. The 15 series comes in four distinct models: iPhone 15 ($799), iPhone 15 Plus ($899), iPhone 15 Pro ($999) and iPhone 15 Pro Max ($1,199).

Apple put on a good show touting the upgrades to the 15 lineup. But the question on everyone’s mind remains: Is the iPhone 15 all that different from the iPhone 14?

Faster charging

One notable update is every phone in the 15 lineup now features a USB-C port. The iPhone 14 series and prior iPhones still rely on Apple’s proprietary Lightning connector. The switch allows for faster charging and higher data transfers. That’s good news when transferring large files, especially photos and video. Also, the iPhone 15 USB-C cables are color-coordinated with the iPhone color you purchase, and that's a nice touch.

Island fever

All four iPhone 15 models come with Dynamic Island, whereas only the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max have the feature.

That's great, but what is Dynamic Island? It’s more evolutionary than revolutionary.

The feature not only frees up more real estate on the display but also shows more information tied to the app you have open, such as a count down to when your Uber driver is arriving, your flight’s gate information or what song you’re listening to — and then you can tap to dive deeper.

There are literally hundreds of applications for Dynamic Island.

Battery capacity

Another advantage of the iPhone 15 series is Apple has upped battery capacity for each of the four models.

According to a Chinese regulatory database, the iPhone 15 and the iPhone 15 Plus come with 3,349mAh and 4,383mAh battery capacity respectively, and the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 15 Pro Max come with 3,274mAh and 4,422mAh respectively.

Those capacities are just slightly higher than comparable 14 series models, but it’s still an increase, so we’ll take it.

Hand feel

Yep, it’s a thing. The iPhone 15 models look a lot like their predecessors, but they may feel different in your hands. The reason is the 15 series has rounded edges on the back and the front of the phones (there’s also a new matte finish on the back for a slightly different look). The iPhone 14 family is flat-sided with defined, sharper edges.

Camera

Apple is democratizing its main camera for the iPhone 15 lineup.

Each model comes with a 48-megapixel main shooter and there are also updates to both night mode and portrait mode, the latter of which will now automatically go into effect when you’re taking photos of people or animals.

The iPhone 14 series features a 48-megapixel main camera only for the Pro and Pro Max versions. No such luck for the iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Plus.
