Hopkinton Deputy Police Chief John Porter placed on leave with no reason given
HOPKINTON - Deputy Police Chief John Porter has been placed on administrative leave.
Police Chief Joseph Bennett announced that the 30-year-veteran of the department was placed on leave on Thursday. No reason was given.
"As there is an active ongoing investigation, no additional information can be released at this time," police said in a release on Saturday.
Porter, 53, has been a police officer in Hopkinton for 30 years. Prior to that, he was an officer at the Upton Police Department, starting at 19 and working there for three years.
He was promoted to deputy police chief last October.

“I’m thrilled Chief Bennett picked me,” Porter said at the time of his promotion. “He came on shortly after me and we’ve been like brothers for the last 29 years. Our families grew up together. We grew up together. We’re two sides of the same coin. We have different ways of thinking. We can work together really well.”
At the time of the promotion, Bennett said he was happy to be able to promote Porter.
“Having worked with Deputy Chief Porter my entire career at HPD, I am proud to be able to have him serve as deputy chief,” Bennett said. “Throughout his career, Deputy Porter has demonstrated commitment to the organization and the community. As we look toward the future, I am excited to work with him as we move the organization forward.”

Throughout his career at the Hopkinton police, Porter has had many roles, serving as a patrol officer, the department's first school resource officer, a detective, a sergeant and a lieutenant.
Porter was honored by the department on July 14 for his 30 years with the department. His name was added to to the department's "30 Years of Service" plaque, which is displayed at the Hopkinton Police station.
“We were thrilled to recognize Deputy Chief Porter’s years of service on Thursday and all he has achieved during his 30 years with the department,” Bennett said in a release, recognizing Porter's time with the department. “He has shown a true commitment to bettering this department and serving the Hopkinton community, and we are fortunate to have him as a member of the Hopkinton Police command staff.”
