HIGH SCHOOL ROUNDUP: Milton girls score season-opening wins

The Milton High girls hockey and basketball teams opened the season with a pair of defensive-minded wins Thursday.

The girls basketball team defeated Dedham, 42-23, while the girls hockey team shut out Fontbonne/Latin Academy, 2-0.

In the basketball win, senior captains Steph Needham (17 points) and Kate Karimbakas (10 points, 12 rebounds) led the way.

In the hockey team's win, Lila Chamoun made 21 saves in the shutout effort. Ellie McConville and Molly Murphy scored the goals.

BOYS HOCKEY

Scituate 5, Norwood 3: Captain Teagen Pratt and James Sullivan scored third-period goals as the Sailors kicked off their season with a first-round win in the Gormley Tournament at Gallo Arena in Bourne. Goaltender Thomas McMellen recorded his first varsity win.

Norwell 4, Sandwich 1: The Clippers opened the season with a victory in a rematch of last year's Division 4 semifinal. Austin Shea scored two goals and Sean Donovan recorded his first varsity win in net in the Gormley Tournament. Timmy Ward and Quinn Simmons also scored.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

New Bedford 63, Middleboro 43: Sophomores Jessica Perry (10 points) and Natalie Kerstein (9 points) led the Sachems (0-1) in scoring in the loss.

BOYS BASKETBALL

New Bedford 65, Middleboro 53: Jacob Briggs scored 15 points in the loss for the Sachems (0-1). Nick Marzelli and Matthew Youngquist both scored 11.

BOYS TRACK & FIELD

Brockton 53, BC High 42: On Tuesday, the Boxers opened the season with a win. The meet was the first high school race held at the New Balance Track in Boston. Matt Turco, Christensen Paul, Ruben Bernard, Jayden Lopes Ribeiro, and Antonio Tobon all had strong performances.

GIRLS TRACK & FIELD

Hingham 57, Whitman-Hanson 42: W-H senior captain Sydney Pires won the 300 and long jump. McKenna McCarthy (mile) and Mia Gocal (shot put) also won their events.
