High school football: Latest USA Today Florida Network poll, Week 10 takeaways

Week 10 turned out to be a very good one for Andrew Jackson’s football team.

First, the Tigers overtook Raines for the top seed in Region 1-2M in the FHSAA’s power rankings. On Friday, Jackson overcame a 12-point halftime deficit to beat Raines 21-12 and claim the District 1-2M championship.

The win is Jackson’s eighth in a row, keeps the Tigers undefeated against Florida opponents and also puts them in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the region when the FHSAA releases the brackets on Sunday.

One of the most impressive parts of the Tigers run is their ability to win different types of games. Jackson has won three games decided by one score, including a 6-2 win against Riverside on Oct. 14.

Crowning moment: Tigers claim district title for first time in more than a decade in victory against Raines

Vero Beach tops Treasure Coast

Give Vero Beach a lot of credit for its 10-7 overtime win against rival Treasure Coast to win the District 12-4S championship.

Vero Beach was coming off a loss to Martin County the week before where it struggled to stop the run but run defense wasn’t an issue Friday. Vero Beach clogged running lanes and got multiple defenders to the ball carrier to slow down a potent offense.

Perhaps more impressive was junior Jake Whiteley guiding Vero Beach’s offense in its biggest game of the year as junior starter Tyler Aronson (thumb) and freshman backup EJ White (shoulder) were either out or injured during the game.

Bishop Kenny ends drought

Bishop Kenny quarterback James Resar threw and rushed for a score as the Crusaders beat Bolles 14-13 to win the District 2-2M championship. It was the first time Bishop Kenny has defeated Bolles since 1977, snapping a 27-game losing streak against the Bulldogs.

This definitely is a signature win on the season for a Bishop Kenny team that is 8-1. The lone blemish on the resume is a one-point loss against Ponte Vedra.

Bishop Verot gets closer to elusive district title

Bishop Verot hasn’t won a district title since 1991 but the Vikings took a big – and very impressive – step toward the 16-2S championship with a 57-10 win over Estero.

Freshman running back Deshon Jenkins Jr. had 152 yards and a career-best four touchdowns on just 14 carries and wide receiver Trevontay Watts caught four passes for 131 yards and two scores.

Verot can win the district title and wrap up the No. 1 seed in Region 4-2S at Key West on Friday.

West Florida leaves no doubt

The Jaguars scored on their opening drive and never looked back in a dominant 38-14 win over previously undefeated Pensacola Catholic to win the District 1-2S title.

Senior quarterback Markell Redding threw for 163 yards and three touchdowns – two to Andre Coleman – and also rushed for 70 yards and a score. Defensively, West Florida had six sacks and nine tackles for loss.

West Florida was fifth in Region 1 in the Week 10 FHSAA power rankings but could move up this week. The Jaguars have the highest strength of schedule of the top eight teams in the region.
