‘The Handmaid’s Tale’ Star Madeline Brewer Reveals if Janine Would Kill Aunt Lydia

Besides Elisabeth Moss’s June, there might be only one other character who’s in a worse situation on The Handmaid’s Tale. And that is Janine, who at the end of season 4 ended up back in Gilead under the tyrannical rule of Aunt Lydia (Ann Dowd), the second most evil character on the show. Who’s the first? Hello, Serena (Yvonne Strahovski), looking at you. Janine’s portrayer Madeline Brewer shared with StyleCaster what “happy” ending she is hoping for her character, if Janine would ever kill Aunt Lydia, why there’s no hope for a romantic love story for Janine, and her complicated sisterly bond with June. After five seasons, Brewer looked back on her time on the show and shared her rose and thorn. Her rose is simple. Ann Dowd. Although their onscreen relationship is super stressful, one might say completely abusive, depending how you describe human enslavement, their off-screen relationship couldn’t be better. Brewer also delved into the bond between June and Janine. She said June has had to bear the brunt of supporting everyone which isn’t always easy. While they may have bonded over trauma in Handmaid hell town, Brewer says that their friendship can only exist in Gilead. So June and Janine aren’t going to be friends in Canada, sorry folks. Don’t worry though, looks like Janine is never getting out of Gilead. Aunt Lydia has got her for good it seems. And June loves going back to Gilead no matter how many times she’s escaped. For June’s sake! Stay in Canada. But we get it, her daughter Hannah is there so Janine and June will no doubt be reunited.

We also asked Brewer if Janine can, to quote Rihanna, find love in a hopeless place. And she said, “No.” Wow, she really just swiped left on Janine. Finally, Brewer shared with us what exactly Janine would do if faced with the opportunity to kill Aunt Lydia. Her answer may surprise you.
