Hailing the heroes in Alliance ceremonies
Veterans, city officials and members of the public came out in force Monday to remember and honor fallen U.S. military veterans during Memorial Day services around the City of Alliance. An early-morning ceremony at Freedom Square in downtown Alliance started off the events, when leaders of the city's veterans groups placed a wreath honoring servicemen who lost their lives during military conflict. Over the course of a day with sunny skies and warm temperatures, a parade featuring school bands, scout troops and various service organizations made its way to Alliance City Cemetery, where a service honored the city's fallen. The parents of U.S. Marine Daniel McVicker, Irma and Mike McVicker, spoke during the event about their son, Daniel, who died during the war in Iraq. McVicker's mother and sister also paid tribute to the Marine in Charlotte, North Carolina, where they were on hand for the Coca-Cola 600, which featured driver Aric Almirola driving with Daniel McVicker's name on his windshield.
