H.S. softball: Grand slam sparks Lubbock Coronado past Abilene Cooper

Hayleigh Bleisch’s go-ahead grand slam highlighted a five-run third inning, while Jesirae Compean and Zaraiah Rodriguez hit back-to-back homers in the fifth inning to power Lubbock Coronado past Cooper 13-8 in a District 4-5A softball game Tuesday at Cougar Diamond.

Cooper jumped on the Lady Mustangs for a 5-0 lead in the first inning. Chyann Sutton and Ashlynn French each hit RBI doubles, the latter with two outs, and Emma Ruiz followed with a two-run homer.

Coronado got two runs in the second inning, but Cooper answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning. Nadia Garcia (walk) and Jazlyn Hatcher (single) both reached and scored – Garcia on Maddie Fry’s ground out and Hatcher on French’s two-out single.

The Lady Mustangs got two runs in the third to make it a 7-4 game, and they took the lead on Bleisch’s grand slam to cap a five-run fourth.

Compean added a two-run shot in the fifth, and Rodriguez followed with a solo homer for a 12-7 lead.

Cooper got a run in the bottom of the fifth on Hatcher’s RBI single.

Coronado got its final run in the sixth.

Coronado starter Jordan Faust got the win, despite allowing eight runs on 13 hits in five innings. She struck out three and walked four. Bleisch pitched two perfect innings to finish the game, striking out two.

Fry, Cooper’s starter, took the loss, giving up 10 runs on 12 hits. She struck out four and walked five.

Hood, Farrar lead Wylie win

At Woodrow, Hanna Hood homered twice and drove in five runs while Reese Farrar tossed a three-hitter as Wylie belted Lubbock-Cooper 10-1 in a District 4-5A game.

Farrar struck out 11 and walked none in going the distance for the Lady Bulldogs (19-5, 5-1).

The Lady Pirates’ lone run came on Kimber Craig’s homer in the fourth. She had two hits overall for Lubbock-Cooper (9-5-1, 1-5).

Wylie scored five runs in the third inning and five more in the seventh.

Jadyn Fernandez hit a three-run double in the third inning, and Hood followed with a homer.

Hood added a three-run shot in the seventh. Cameron Gregory doubled and scored on Halli Russell’s sacrifice fly. Kynslee George capped the inning with an RBI double.

Wylie is at home against Abilene High at 6:30 p.m. Friday in a district game.
