Grant deputy among 10 honored with Heart of Law Enforcement awards

Grant Parish Sheriff's Deputy Ethan Hemphill didn't tell anyone what he'd done for a man in need, but one of his coworkers thought others should know.

Hemphill was among 10 Louisiana officers honored Tuesday with a Heart of Law Enforcement Award during the annual Beyond the Badge luncheon in Baton Rouge.

The deputy had been sent to investigate a report of a suspicious person, but what he found was a man "down on his luck and trying to get to North Louisiana," reads a release from the sheriff's office.

But Hemphill couldn't find anyone who could pick the man up that night. Grant Parish has no homeless shelters or businesses that are open 24 hours per day.

Instead of leaving the man, Hemphill found him a safe place to sleep for that night "and with his own money, without being told, bought blankets from a local store for the man to have," it reads.

Another deputy also responded to call and saw what Hemphill did. He told others what he'd seen.

"Deputy Hemphill’s actions are a perfect example of selfless acts that are done on a daily basis by law enforcement professionals," reads the release.
