Giant lobster rolls, Creamsicle cones: Enjoy summer treats now at these Taunton-area spots
We’re fully into spring now and soon enough things will be blooming and the promise of even warmer, sunnier days won’t be so distant.
The return of the warm weather means a lot of folks will see their favorite things coming back, like barbecues and beach days. It also means some not-so-favorites will be back, like mosquitoes, but let’s focus on the positive.
Luckily, although summer is still a ways off, residents of Greater Taunton don’t have to wait for their favorite seasonal restaurants.
They’re already open.
So while we wait patiently for the weather to do its thing, here are five Taunton area eateries where you can enjoy the flavors of summer right now:
Tom & Jimmy’s, Taunton and Middleboro
337 Winthrop St. and 109 W. Grove St.
Hours: Both locations open seven days a week, from noon to 9 p.m.
Kick off the season: Start your ice cream season off right with a strawberry shortcake sundae. Consider it a preview of the still-upcoming strawberry season, with a scoop of vanilla ice cream, a scoop of strawberry ice cream, and a scoop of strawberry cheesecake ice cream. It’s all topped with shortcake, lots of strawberries, whipped cream, and a cherry. If you’re not up for a sundae just yet and want to keep things simple, we can personally vouch for the mint chocolate chip ice cream.
Kev’s Ice Cream, East Taunton
478 Middleboro Ave.
Hours: Open seven days a week, from noon to 8 p.m.
Kick off the season: New season, new flavors! Kev’s is starting their season with tasty newcomers: the intriguing Graham Central Station, caramel cashew chip, frozen pudding and chocolate mint chip, among others. The Creamsicle ice cream is sure to conjure up some nostalgia.
Frates Drive-In, Taunton
1423 Somerset Ave.
Hours: Open seven days a week, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Kick off the season: What else but the giant lobster roll? Even the little lobster mascot out front is inviting guests in to try some. Don’t think too deeply about that though. The lobster roll comes with butter or mayo, and comes with french fries. For 75 cents, you can add onion rings or sweet potato fries.
Artistic charcuterie: ‘Happy App-y' Taunton food lover feeds charcuterie frenzy with new Ah-Mazing Grazing store
Seafood & Cones, Raynham
77 Broadway
Hours: Sunday to Thursday, from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Friday and Saturday, from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Kick off the season: Try the snow crab! Stop by on a Sunday; they’ve got snow crab as well as lobster rolls. And, just like the name implies, you can enjoy a cone of ice cream and end your meal on a sweet note.
Uncle Ed’s Front Porch, Rehoboth
116 Winthrop St.
Hours: Friday to Sunday, from noon to 8 p.m.; Closed Monday to Thursday
Kick off the season: Warmer days are ahead, and so are cool treats. Get things going on the right foot by trying a blueberry cheesecake frappe, which has, you guessed it, a little bit of cheesecake on top.
