George Floyd protests: Minneapolis police chief takes a knee at emotional memorial

George Floyd took centre stage once more today as his body was seen on the streets of Minneapolis for the first time since a former police officer, Derek Chauvin, pinned him to the ground as he gasped for breath.

The image of Mr Floyd's shrouded coffin being lifted out of a hearse was beamed across the country as hundreds gathered to remember the 46-year-old in a memorial service.

Crowds of people thronged the streets around North Central University, where the service was held, chanting: "George Floyd".

After days of unrest, it was a message of hope that filled the city on Thursday. Those who gathered outside the university's Worship Centre played music, waved bouquets of flowers, and handed out food.
