Galesburg High School baseball team hopes to get back over .500 before week is over

GALESBURG — It's a crucial week for the Galesburg High School baseball team.

Heading into Tuesday night's Western Big 6 Conference home game against Rock Island Alleman, the Silver Streaks were 4-5 overall and 1-1 in league play, and they had a chance to get back over .500 by the time the weekend is over with a non-conference road affair at Rockridge slated for Wednesday and a WB6 doubleheader in Geneseo on tap Saturday.

Galesburg's fourth victory in 2022 came against Monmouth-Roseville on Monday at Jim Sundberg Field. The Streaks ended up with a 12-2 win over the Titans in five innings.

Defensively, Galesburg has committed 23 errors this season but it's not an area Streaks coach Jeremy Pickrel is concerned about right now.

Galesburg's roster contains six seniors — Brock Anderson, Grant Aten, Kannon Kleine, Thad Morling, Josh Perkins and Tucker Peters — nine juniors and five sophomores, and the Streaks want and need to play more games. Mother Nature has wrecked havoc in the early going for all.

"It's all about reps and learning as we continue to kind of build this thing," Pickrel said after GHS beat Mon-Rose. "Our bats have been there which I didn't know how soon that was going to come along with as many inexperienced guys we had. I think our defense is going to be fine.

"Our pitching, we've got to get a grasp on," Pickrel added. "We have to figure out how to use guys and in what situations. That is something that you usually have figured out as you get into the conference season but because of rainouts and weather we haven't had an opportunity to get outside and put those guys through those situations. We're trying to figure things like that out on the fly but today we came out with the bats and a good start to our week.

"It's a matter of taking it one game at a time."
