During a news conference, Springfield Township Police Chief Rick Bley called Unwin an "amazing person," saying his infectious smile and personality were hallmarks of why he was loved in the community.
William Dunson, 50, of North College Hill, was the other driver killed in the crash. He will also be honored at Unwin's visitation. He is remembered as a servant to his community and church, and many officers on the Springfield Township force personally knew Dunson, the chief said.
Today would have been his 51st birthday.
North College Hill crash leaves two dead, including officer
Springfield Township Police Chief Rick Bley said the collision occurred as multiple police jurisdictions responded to an "officer needs assistance call." Unwin was part of that response.
Unwin had been a police officer for four years, having worked two years in the city of Hamilton and two years with Springfield Township.
It is not clear what caused the crash or which car struck which. The wreck occurred on Hamilton Avenue in North College Hill.
The Hamilton County Sheriff's Office is handling the crash investigation. Officials said it won't be complete until late this week at the earliest.
