Forget kidney-shaped. These pool designs are over-the-top stunning

A swimming pool is a swimming pool — right?

Wrong. Not when a swimming pool is also a violin, a rectangle or the Philadelphia Flyers logo.

Those designs are among the five we're featuring in this look at cool New Jersey pools. So whether you're looking for inspiration on that pool renovation or just simply like to look into how other people in New Jersey live, here's a look at some unique pools.

Wait til you read more about that violin. (It comes with lighted strings.)

A pool with a personal water slide

It doesn't matter how old you are — who wouldn't want a personal water slide in their backyard?

This 2,500-square-foot saltwater pool in Montvale is a fun take on your traditional rectangle pool, mostly because it comes with it's very own 40-foot water slide.

It also features a negative edge — a wall that is not level with the rest of the pool, allowing water to flow over it and give the illusion of it falling into another body of water. There's also a shallow area for chairs that sit just under the pool's water.

A pool with twists and turns

This outdoor paradise in Scotch Plains is perfect for those outdoor gatherings to close out the summer.

The pool consists of a variety of curved edges instead of the traditional circle-shaped pool, as well as three water spills from a higher wall next to the pool. A lounge area with an outdoor bar surrounds the pool.

A lazy rectangle pool

This pool in Holmdel, known as the Lazy Ell, adds flair to the typical rectangular pool design.

Instead of your run-of-the-mill linear pool, this pool design is shaped almost like a slanted L — hence, the name — adding a geometric feel to the back yard. It is also surrounded with several waterfall spills, as well as fire and water bowls.

A violin-shaped pool

While not located in New Jersey, this large-and-in charge pool was constructed by Mahwah-based Cipriano Custom Pools and Landscaping.

This violin-shaped swimming pool, located in Bedford, New York, was custom designed for ex-financer Jay Dweck, who is said to have a passion for the instrument. It features two fish-filled koi ponds that act as the bow of the violin, 5,760 strands of fiber-optic lighting to represent the violin strings — which can also sync to music — as well as fiber-optic rope lighting lining all edges of the pool.

A pool for sports lovers

For the sports lovers out there: What's cooler than having an in-ground pool shaped like your favorite team's logo? Probably nothing — at least, that's likely what Bobby Clarke, former hockey player for the Philadelphia Flyers, thought when he purchased this home in Cherry Hill in the 1970s.

Clarke lived in the 54 Fries Lane home from 1975 to 1982, during which he constructed an in-ground pool shaped like the Flyers' logo in the back yard. Now, the pool is also equipped with water fountains and an outdoor cabana.
