Several fire agencies battled a wind-driven vegetation fire, which began Sunday afternoon west of National Trails Highway in Helendale.

The blaze was reported at 3:49 p.m. near Wild Road and La Paz Drive in Helendale, according to the San Bernardino County Fire Department.

The second alarm fire was first reported at over 5-acres with some structures threatened. At one point 20 to 40 mph winds pushed fire.

Cal Fire, the Bureau of Land Management, the Victorville Fire Department and the Apple Valley Fire Protection District also responded to the blaze near and along the Mojave River.

Around 7 p.m., windy conditions began to subside and firefighters were able to stop the fire’s forward spread.

Just before 9 p.m., the fire had burned close to 19 acres and was nearly 75% contained.

About 15 structures were threatened but not reported to be damaged. No evacuation orders were issued.

Early Monday morning, firefighters continued to work on perimeter control, line construction and mop up.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
