El Paso native Darell Hernaiz promoted to Triple-A Las Vegas
Americas High School graduate Darell Hernaiz continues his ascent in professional baseball.
Hernaiz, who plays shortstop in the Oakland Athletics organization, was promoted from Double-A Midland to Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday.
Hernaiz, who graduated from Americas in 2019, was traded from the Baltimore Orioles organization to Oakland after last season.
In Midland, Hernaiz was hitting .338 with five home runs, 43 RBI, 43 runs scored and 94 hits in 278 at-bats. He was second in the Texas League in batting average.
Hernaiz was a fifth round selection of the Orioles in 2019 and found success in the Baltimore organization.
Las Vegas will play against the Reno Aces for a three-game series beginning Friday in Las Vegas. Hernaiz and Las Vegas will be in Albuquerque Aug. 1-6. Las Vegas does not visit El Paso again this year in the Pacific Coast League.
Earlier this week, former Coronado baseball standout Ivan Melendez was promoted from High-A Hillsboro to Double-A Amarillo in the Arizona Diamondbacks organization.
"We're proud of Darell," Americas baseball coach Jesse Munoz said. "He's worked hard to get where he's at and he is very talented. I'm not surprised he's getting promoted to the Triple-A level. He's excited for this opportunity."
