OKEMOS — A vacant storefront in a plaza off Marsh Road, previously occupied by Maru Sushi until it closed two years ago, will be home to another sushi restaurant this fall.

Kaiyo Sushi & Grill is expected to open in the approximately 2,000 square-foot space at 5100 Marsh Road, said Kai Zhung, the eatery's general manager.

"We serve sushi, poke bowls, hibachi grilled dishes, also udon noodle soups," he said, with a focus on a variety of sushi rolls. The menu will also include sashimi, fried rice and appetizers including spring rolls and tempura, according to a menu Zhung provided.

The price of items will range from under $10 to just under $50. Alcoholic beverages and wine will also be served.

The restaurant's Facebook page describes the eatery as a "Relaxed sushi restaurant offering classic rolls & sake in a cozy atmosphere."

"I would say it's more casual," Zhung said of the atmosphere.

The restaurant will seat about 40 people, he said. Owner He Li, an Okemos resident, and management are currently hiring for all positions, Zhung said. Kaiyo Sushi & Grill is expected to employ up to 10 people, he said.

Signage for the restaurant is already on the front of the building suite, which hasn't been occupied since Maru Sushi closed its location there in August 2021.

Kaiyo Sushi & Grill is expected to open in September, Zhung said, though no opening date has been set yet.
