Dylan Mulvaney Apologized For "Talking Over" Laverne Cox And "Disrupting" Her On The Grammys Red Carpet
By now, you probably know Dylan Mulvaney. Dylan rose to fame on TikTok for her series "Days of Girlhood," in which she documented her transitioning journey.
And you know Laverne Cox. She's a trans activist and phenomenal actress who starred in Orange Is the New Black, Promising Young Woman, and more.
Well, the two had an encounter on the red carpet that's been making the rounds on social media. In the video, Dylan approaches Laverne and tells her she was on her 2023 vision board.
"I was on your 2023 vision board. That's lovely," Laverne responded. "It's insane that you're documenting so much of your life. Make sure you keep things to yourself. Everything cannot be for the public. They love it, but everything cannot be for them."
Dylan slightly interrupted and said, "I just did my FFS [facial feminization surgery]," to which Laverne responded with this:
Laverne then stressed that it's still important to keep things for yourself.
The interaction drew mixed feelings: Some thought it was awkward or shady. Some praised Laverne for looking out for Dylan. Some criticized Dylan for talking over Laverne, a famous Black trans woman who's been an activist for years.
Well, on Tuesday night, Dylan made a TikTok responding to the discourse. "I got to meet my role model, Laverne Cox. I walked up to her and we had a lovely private conversation to begin with, and then I did ask her, 'Would you mind making a video with me?' She said, 'Of course,'" Dylan shared.
She then said Laverne wanted to make another one because she had "more to say."
"You know when you get really nervous — for me, when I get really nervous, I just can't stop talking. I'm like, just, word vomit. Well, I totally disrupted her. I feel terrible. I really apologize for that. I watched it back. And here you got me, who's like, been doing this for less than a year."
"Then, you've got the most evolved, amazing trans woman on the planet speaking her truth, and I'm talking over her. So, I apologize for that. One of my things on my vision board is to be a better listener — especially on trans topics."
"So, work in progress right here," Dylan continued. "But she gave me such great advice when it came to making sure that I'm keeping some things for myself." She then added that she's taking Laverne's advice and has made some private videos that she may not post.
Dylan concluded by adding that she was happy Laverne shared the original video on her Instagram and that she invited Laverne to coffee. "Again, wildly grateful for that moment. She looked beautiful."
