Duke football vs. Clemson live score updates: Riley Leonard gives Blue Devils the lead

Duke football will start the 2023 season in primetime against No. 9 Clemson on Labor Day in Durham.

The Blue Devils and Tigers will kick off at 8 p.m. inside Wallace Wade Stadium in a game that will be televised on ESPN. Coming off a 9-4 season in Mike Elko’s first year as Duke’s head coach, the Devils return quarterback Riley Leonard and a wealth of weapons.

Defensively, the Blue Devils are led by captains DeWayne Carter and Ja'Mion Franklin. Duke is 0-13 against nationally-ranked opponents in season openers. Clemson has won 25 of its last 30 games against the Blue Devils, including five straight.

Duke earned a 28-7 win against No. 9 Clemson to spark a field-storming moment in the final seconds.

Robeson County native Jordan Waters had a 36-yard touchdown to extend Duke’s lead with 3:15 remaining.

Dorian Mausi gets interception and Clemson fans start to leave the stadium | 11:09 p.m.

Mausi snagged Duke’s third takeaway in the second half and Clemson fans started to head for the exits with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter.

Jaquez Moore’s touchdown run extends Duke’s lead | 10:46 p.m.

Duke running back Jaquez Moore extended the Blue Devils’ lead with a 9-yard touchdown run. After Riley Leonard connected with Jalon Calhoun on the two-point conversion, Duke had a 21-7 lead with 10:33 remaining.

Jaylen Stinson fumble recovery keeps Duke in charge | 10:40 p.m.

With Clemson’s offense threatening, Duke’s defense came through with a second fumble recovery. Jaylen Stinson scooped up the ball and returned it just beyond midfield.

The Blue Devils scored the only points in the third quarter.

With Clemson’s offense in the red zone, Duke’s defense came through with another big play. After a fumbled exchange by Klubnik and Shipley, Jeremiah Lewis scooped up the ball.

Clemson’s offense got to the 1-yard line before a penalty pushed them back and Duke’s defense stood tall to force a field-goal attempt. The Blue Devils blocked their second field goal. Wesley Williams was credited with the block.

On a third-down play early in the third quarter, Duke quarterback Riley Leonard broke several tackles on an incredible 44-yard touchdown run, tip-toeing down the sideline on his way to the end zone. The Blue Devils led 13-7 with 12:40 left in the third quarter.

HALFTIME: Clemson 7, Duke 6 | 9:37 p.m.

Duke led 6-0 into the second quarter, but a muffed punt led to a Clemson touchdown and the Tigers held on the rest of the first half. The Blue Devils had two turnovers.

Following Duke's turnover, Clemson's offense took advantage of its opportunity in the red zone. Cade Klubnik connected with Will Shipley to help the Tigers take their first lead with 10:09 left in the first half.

Clemson's offense had three punts and a blocked field goal on its first four drives, but a fumbled punt by Duke's Jalon Calhoun gave the Tigers some new life.

Duke head coach Mike Elko saw defensive captain Ja'Mion Franklin block a 41-yard field goal attempt to keep Duke ahead.

Todd Pelino makes 22-yard field to give Duke 3-0 lead | 8:21 p.m.

Duke's offense got off to a solid start on its opening drive before stalling in the red zone. Todd Pelino made a 22-yard field goal with 9:19 remaining in the first quarter to give the Blue Devils a 3-0 lead.
